In 1440, nine years after Jeanne d'Arc's execution in Rouen, the Hundred Years' War is in its final stages. The nobility of France, driven by greed, rebels against King Charles VII, seeking to restore feudal power and oppose his centralizing reforms. Despite being united in the fight against the English, they have turned against the crown, jeopardizing the nation's escape from the war. Emily du May, a French duke's illegitimate daughter, is taken in by Robert de Baudricourt and raised as "Emil," following Jeanne's footsteps. When Robert is summoned by Constable Richemont to fight the rebels, Emil confronts her foster father and demands to accompany the French loyalists. Emil is determined to carry out Jeanne's mission and sees visions of her predecessor. She faces the rebels led by Dauphin Louis, Charles VII's power-hungry son, as she travels across the nation Jeanne tried to unify.
